The Department of Health advise who should be immunised against the influenza virus each autumn. This is reviewed from time to time. The aim is to protect people who are most likely to develop complications from flu. These groups include:

·         If you are living in a nursing home or other long stay residential care accommodation.

Walk In Cholesterol Testing

Cholesterol is a lipid (fat chemical) that is made in the liver from fatty foods that we eat. A certain amount of cholesterol is present in the blood stream and is needed to maintain healthy. Over months, and years too much cholesterol in our blood stream can narrow or block blood vessel and arteries.  This can cause serious conditions such as: angina, heart attack, stroke, transient ischeamic attack (TIA), and peripheral vascular disease. In the UK, cardiovascular diseases are a major cause of poor health and the biggest cause for death.

We can provide patients with cholesterol test results instantly. Our staff can advise on the best ways to improve cholesterol levels and how to lead a more healthy life style. The service takes between 15-20 minutes and is conducted from one of our private consultation rooms.

Walk In Diabetes Testing

Diabetes occurs when the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood becomes too high. To remain healthy, your blood glucose levels should not be too high or too low. A hormone called insulin helps to take glucose from the bloodstream into the various cells in the body. This helps keep the blood sugar normal.

In many cases, patients do not even know they are living with diabetes or are at risk of developing diabetes and its associated symptoms such as: excess thirst, tiredness, weight loss, passing large amounts of urine and feeling generally unwell.

 A mildly raised glucose level in the short term will not cause any symptoms but if untreated in the long term can lead to some complications (often years after diabetes is first diagnosed). These include an increased risk of heart disease, stroke and poor circulation, vision problems, kidney and nerve damage, and impotence. In general, the risk of developing complications is reduced if the blood glucose level is well controlled, and other risk factors such as high blood pressure are dealt with.

It is best to get tested early and start treatment early if required, to prevent any of the possible long term complications from diabetes. Walk In Blood Pressure Monitoring 

Blood pressure is the pressure of blood in your arteries (blood vessels). Sometimes this can be either too high or too low depending on a number of factors such as stress, diet, weight, levels of exercise and life style.

Having high blood pressure is one of several risk factors that can increase your chances of developing heart disease, a stroke, and other serious conditions. As a rule, the higher the blood pressure the greater the risk. However, low blood pressure is also a risk when the flow of blood is too low to deliver enough oxygen and nutrients to vital organs such as the brain, heart, and kidney, the organs do not function normally and may be permanently damaged.

At Clockwork our qualified staff can measure your blood pressure quickly using our specialist and accurate instruments. However, a one off blood pressure reading is not a good indicator if you are suffering from high or low blood pressure. You are said to have high or low blood pressure if you have several readings that are high/low, which are taken on different occasions, and when you are relaxed. We advise that you get your blood pressure readings 3 times to get an accurate diagnosis. If you are diagnosed to be suffering from high or low blood pressure our staff can advise on the best treatments.

Gardsil Cervical Cancer Vaccine

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a common virus that is passed on via genital contact. There are many types HPV types that affect the genital areas and most times they cause no harm at all. However, sometimes the virus can persist and this can lead to cervical cancer, pre-cancerous legions and genital warts.

Gardsil is a new vaccine against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Gardsil is a significant medical advance: it is the first vaccine able to protect against a major cause of cancer in women. Gardsil protects against HPV types 6, 11, 16 and 18. These four types of HPV are the main causes of cervical cancer and genital warts.

 
Gardsil will not protect against diseases that are not caused by HPV such as other sexually transmitted infections or other cancer types. Gardsil will also not protect against HPV types that one has already been exposed too.
